Drinagh Vs. Courtmacsherry

Saturday 21st of January

Courtmacsherry made the long trip to Canon Crowley park last Saturday to play Drinagh Rangers in the U18 Division 1 league. Courtmacsherry started strong, dominating the early possession. For the first 20 minutes of the game, Courtmac piled the pressure on the Drinagh back four. They created a few chances but nothing that threatening to Drinagh. After about a quarter of the game had been played Rangers began to look a lot more comfortable. Daniel McCarthy controlled the ball around midfield and linked up well with Daniel Fernandez up front to create some great chances. At this point a goal seemed inevitable for Ritchie Collins’ men. Miles Tobin and Daniel Fernandez both had great opportunities to put Drinagh in front but were denied by Courtmacsherry’s Shane Coomey in goal. Shane produced a number of great saves to keep the two sides level heading into half-time. Drinagh started the second half in great form and it took only 10 minutes for Daniel Fernandez to open the scoring. After holding out for so long Courtmac crumbled under the pressure, conceding 3 mor goals in quick succession from Daniel Fernandez, Miles Tobin and Daniel McCarthy. Courtmac began to find their feet again and got possession just outside the Drinagh box. Drinagh’s Charlie McCarthy was fouled by two Courtmac players while attempting to stop the attack. However the Referee was oblivious to this and for some mad reason, gave advantage to Courtmacsherry in a very dangerous position. Spurred on by this Courtmac played through the Drinagh defence and into the box. Seamus O’ Regan was there for Drinagh and swiftly put a stop to the attack with a great tackle to disposes the Courtmac striker. But the referee (Paul McDemott), in a moment of madness, awarded a completely ludicrous penalty to Courtmac. This ridiculous decision saw Courtmac edge back to 4-1 down. But they didn’t stop there. Just 5 minutes later the scored again to make it 4-2. This did not faze the Drinagh men who scored again through Miles Tobin before the end seeing them secure their 1st place position on the league table, 2 points clear of Dunmanway Town.
